Head of General Insurance

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Head of General Insurance to lead the general insurance portfolio of an established insurance brokerage in Tanzania.

This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for underwriting, claims oversight, portfolio growth, client management and insurer relationships. The successful candidate will combine strong technical general insurance expertise with commercial acumen and the ability to lead and develop a high-performing team.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the company’s general insurance portfolio, ensuring strong underwriting performance, portfolio quality and sustainable growth.
• Support new business acquisition through technical input, proposal development, client presentations and negotiations.
• Identify opportunities for cross-selling, client retention and portfolio expansion.
• Oversee underwriting for major corporate accounts and develop tailored insurance and risk solutions.
• Manage relationships with insurers, assessors and other key industry stakeholders.
• Oversee the claims function, particularly major and complex losses, ensuring efficient processing and settlement.
• Monitor claims trends, loss ratios and underwriting performance and recommend appropriate corrective strategies.
• Lead, mentor and develop the underwriting and claims teams, establishing clear performance standards and KPIs.
• Maintain strong relationships with existing clients and actively support referral and business-development opportunities.
• Monitor developments, competitors and emerging risks within the Tanzanian insurance market.
• Prepare management and regulatory reports covering underwriting, claims and portfolio performance.
• Support the CEO and Directors in developing and executing growth strategies and business targets.
• Oversee premium collection processes and work closely with Finance to ensure smooth operational and financial management.
• Represent the organisation professionally across industry, client and business networks.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a senior general insurance professional with strong technical underwriting and claims knowledge, combined with proven experience managing corporate insurance portfolios.
