About the Role
Our client, a leading agribusiness with operations in Tanzania, is seeking an experienced Sustainability Manager to lead the country's sustainability and ESG agenda. You will translate global and regional priorities into practical country-level plans, providing strategic direction, governance, assurance and cross-functional coordination across farmer and operational programmes.

Key Responsibilities
ESG Programme, Strategy and Coordination
- Lead delivery of the country sustainability roadmaps, aligned with global strategy, regional priorities, customer expectations and local business objectives.
- Develop, coordinate and implement country ESG strategies, objectives and action plans, integrating CSR, sustainable agriculture and customer sustainability programmes.
- Advise the Country Head and leadership team on material ESG risks, opportunities, regulatory expectations and strategic trade-offs.
- Lead customer environmental and social programme delivery, ensuring accurate documentation, data integrity and timely submission of deliverables.
- Guide teams on farmer livelihoods, sustainable agriculture, environmental performance, social due diligence, human rights, GHG and health and safety priorities.
Data Governance, Systems and Insight
- Oversee traceability systems, documentation control, data governance and validation processes so that information is complete, consistent and decision-ready.
- Use trends, gaps and assurance findings to inform risk management, performance improvement and investment priorities.
Monitoring and Reporting
- Lead the assurance, audit and monitoring framework, ensuring findings are converted into corrective actions and stronger controls.
- Direct audit preparation and engagement with management, customers and other parties.
- Set the reporting and assurance calendar, and review and approve sustainability, customer and ESG reports before submission.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation
- Maintain the country ESG risk register and integrate sustainability risks into business planning and customer engagement.
- Assess reputational, regulatory, human rights, environmental and supply chain exposure, and recommend and track mitigation actions.
People Management
- Lead, coach and develop direct reports (including programme, environmental and compliance functions) and build sustainability capability across the business.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Social Science, Human Rights, Engineering, Business Management or a related field (essential).
- Postgraduate qualification in sustainability, ESG, environmental management, development or business (desirable).
- Risk management, environmental, ISO, NOSA, audit, data assurance or project management certification (desirable).
- Membership of a relevant professional sustainability, environmental, safety or governance body (desirable).
Experience
- 8+ years in ESG, sustainability, sustainable agriculture, environmental management, human rights, customer programmes, assurance or risk management, including senior cross-functional leadership.
- Experience in agribusiness, agricultural supply chains or manufacturing, preferably in a multi-stakeholder, customer-facing environment.
- Proven ability to advise senior executives and influence leadership teams.
- Experience managing ESG platforms, customer reporting, data validation, audits and external assurance processes.
- Strong project and change management capability in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments.
- People leadership experience, including coaching, performance management and resource planning.
- Experience translating ESG strategy into annual operating plans, budgets and implementation roadmaps.
Knowledge
- ESG strategy, governance, risk management and sustainability reporting cycles.
- Sustainable agriculture, customer programmes and supply chain social and environmental due diligence.
- GHG, environmental management and relevant local legal and national standards.
- Data governance, documentation control and quality assurance.
- Budgeting, business planning and analytics.
- Familiarity with GRI, SEDEX/SMETA or similar ESG reporting and assurance platforms (advantageous).
